What the AI does
- It reads the photo you took: the line in the homework diary, a printed sheet, a spelling list, a lesson.
- It recognises the kind of homework among Kamelo’s exercise types (weekly spellings, common exception words, times tables, number bonds, mental maths, numbers in words, poems, lessons, vocabulary in another language) and pulls out the content.
- For a lesson, it suggests three to five questions, each with the sentence from the lesson it comes from, suited to your child’s year group. These questions are labelled as written by AI.
- It checks that the text shown to your child is suitable for their age.
What it never does
- It doesn’t solve the homework or hand over ready-made answers: Kamelo has your child practise what the teacher set.
- It doesn’t talk to your child. Kamelo the character only says lines written in advance, and your child never types a message to an AI.
- It doesn’t see your child’s name: the name is hidden on your phone before upload and isn’t part of the data sent.
- It decides nothing for you: no exercise reaches your child without your confirmation.
Which AI, and why this one
Kamelo uses Claude, by Anthropic, called from our servers hosted in Paris. Anthropic’s terms say that no model is trained on your data and that nothing is kept beyond processing the request, except in the cases they describe (30 days at most, and up to 2 years for content flagged by Anthropic’s safety systems). No other AI receives your photos.
You stay in charge
The checking screen is at the heart of Kamelo. You see each exercise Kamelo recognised, with anything he isn’t sure about highlighted in orange. You correct, delete or confirm. Every AI result has a ‘Report a problem’ button. And at any time you can withdraw your consent in Settings › Privacy: photos are no longer read, and typing-in keeps working.
Why there is no chat with Kamelo
A free conversation with an AI has no place in an app for 6 to 11-year-olds. Kamelo is a character: he reacts, changes colour, encourages and celebrates. His words are written and checked by a grown-up, in French, British English and American English. That is a design choice, not a temporary limit.
Why the free plan limits photos
Every photo the AI reads has a real cost for us. So the free plan includes three photos in the first 14 days, then one a month. Typing-in and replaying exercises already created are never limited. Kamelo Premium gives unlimited photos, within fair use.
