Terms of use

These terms govern your use of the Kamelo app. We wrote them to be read: if anything is unclear, write to us at thomas.sobstyl@me.com.

1. Who provides Kamelo

Kamelo is published by Thomas Sobstyl, an independent developer based in France (“we”). Full legal information is in the legal notice at the end of this page.

2. Acceptance

By using Kamelo, you accept these terms and confirm that you have read our privacy policy. If you downloaded Kamelo from the App Store, Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies; on Google Play, the Google Play terms govern your relationship with Google. Apple and Google are not parties to these terms: we alone are responsible for Kamelo, its content, maintenance and support.

3. The service

Kamelo turns the homework of a child aged 6 to 11 into short practice sessions:

  • in the parent space, you photograph or import the instruction or the lesson; an artificial intelligence reads it and suggests exercises (dictation and word lists, sight words, times tables, arithmetic, numbers, conjugation, poems, lesson quizzes, vocabulary); you check them, correct them if needed and confirm them;
  • in the child space, your child practises with Kamelo the chameleon, with no advertising and no purchases.

Kamelo is a practice tool: it does not do the homework for your child, gives no marks and replaces neither the teacher nor you.

4. Who can use Kamelo

Kamelo is for parents and adults responsible for a child (“you”), who must be adults. Children have no account: they use the child space under your responsibility. Kamelo is for private, non-commercial family use; it is not designed for classroom use.

5. Account, parent space and parent code

  • No account is required: by default, your family’s data is attached to your device. You can sign in (“Sign in with Apple” or a sign-in link sent by email) to back up your data, find it on another device or restore your purchases. Without signing in, losing or resetting the device may mean losing that data.
  • The parent space is protected by a 6-digit code. Keep it to yourself: it protects settings, purchases, external links and consents. If you forget it, the app offers an adult check before you choose a new code.
  • You are responsible for the use of Kamelo on your devices and for the information you enter.

6. Free version

Kamelo is free, with no advertising, and includes:

  • 3 homework scans in the 14 days after your family is created in Kamelo, then 1 scan per calendar month (in your family’s time zone); a scan only counts if it recognised an exercise or an instruction;
  • 1 child profile;
  • unlimited replay of exercises already created;
  • unlimited manual entry of homework.

Every scan is read by an artificial intelligence, which has a cost. We may pause free scans for a while (for example during a surge or an abuse); manual entry and the exercises already created stay available.

7. Kamelo Premium: subscription, trial, renewal and cancellation

  • What you get: the benefits described in the app at the time of purchase, including unlimited scans, up to 3 child profiles and progress tracking.
  • Fair use: unlimited scans are meant for one family’s homework. To prevent abuse, a cap of 15 scans a day and 100 scans a month applies, well above what a family with three children uses; beyond it, scans resume the next day or the next month, and manual entry stays unlimited. We may also pause a family’s scans until the next day in case of abnormal use (for example a technical fault that repeats analyses).
  • Plans: annual or monthly subscription, renewing automatically. Prices are shown in the app before purchase, including taxes, in your store’s currency.
  • Free trial: the annual subscription may include a 7-day free trial, once, subject to your store’s eligibility rules. The trial starts when you choose the offer. If you do not cancel before the end of the trial (on the App Store, at least 24 hours before), the annual subscription starts and you are charged.
  • Payment: payment goes through your App Store or Google Play account, which collects the price and handles billing. We never have access to your payment details.
  • Renewal: the subscription renews automatically for the same period at the then-current price, unless you cancel before the end of the current period (on the App Store, at least 24 hours before). Renewal is charged within the 24 hours before the end of the period. For the annual subscription, French consumers are told that they can choose not to renew no earlier than three months and no later than one month before it ends (Article L.215-1 of the French Consumer Code).
  • Cancellation: at any time and in a few taps, from your App Store account settings (Settings › your name › Subscriptions) or Google Play (Payments & subscriptions › Subscriptions), or from Kamelo: parent space › Settings › Subscription › “Manage / cancel subscription”. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period: you keep Premium until then, then Kamelo returns to the free version, and your exercises and progress are kept.
  • Price: if we change the price, your store tells you in advance and, where its rules or the law require it, asks for your agreement; you can cancel before the new price applies.
  • Refunds and withdrawal: because the purchase is made with Apple or Google, refund requests and the right of withdrawal you have as a consumer (14 days in the European Union and the United Kingdom, subject to the exceptions provided by law) are handled by them, under their terms: Apple or Google Play. We cannot issue refunds ourselves, but we will gladly help you with the process.
  • Family: Apple Family Sharing is not offered; the subscription covers your Kamelo family (up to 3 child profiles). To use it on another device, sign in to the same account or use “Restore purchases”.
  • Deleting your account: deleting your Kamelo account does not cancel a subscription bought through your store. Remember to cancel it.

8. Artificial intelligence: what Kamelo does and does not do

  • Kamelo uses an artificial intelligence model, Claude, provided by Anthropic, to read the photographed instruction or lesson, recognise the exercise type, prepare its content and check that texts meant for your child are suitable. This reading only happens with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
  • The AI can make mistakes (hard-to-read handwriting, blurry photo, ambiguous instruction): that is why you check and confirm every exercise before your child sees it. If in doubt, the teacher’s instruction prevails.
  • Lesson quizzes are generated by the AI from the photographed lesson, and each question quotes the sentence of the lesson it comes from. They carry the label “Questions generated by AI and reviewed by a parent”: you must review them before assigning them.
  • Kamelo does not do your child’s homework, does not mark your child and makes no decision about them. Kamelo, the character, does not chat freely: all its lines are written in advance.
  • You can report unsuitable content with the “Report a problem” button.

9. Your content

  • The photos, texts and information you add remain yours. You only allow us to host and process them to provide the service, for the periods set out in the privacy policy.
  • When you ask us to learn a new exercise type, you also allow us to review the photo for 30 days in order to teach Kamelo that exercise type. We never publish its content or personal data.
  • You only add documents you may use for your family’s private use (homework, lessons, word lists), and you avoid photographing faces or personal documents.
  • We do not use your content for advertising, and we do not use it to train artificial intelligence models.

10. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use Kamelo for commercial purposes, in a classroom or for people outside your family;
  • add content that is unlawful, violent, hateful, sexual or that infringes the rights of others;
  • get around the service’s limits (for example the free version’s scan limit), its protections or the parent code, or try to access another family’s data;
  • misuse the AI, for example by photographing instructions designed to manipulate it, or use it for anything other than homework;
  • copy, modify or decompile the app, or extract its content, except where the law allows it;
  • disrupt the service (automated submissions, overloading, attacks).

11. Intellectual property

  • The app, the name and character of Kamelo, the illustrations, animations, sounds, texts and code are protected and belong to Thomas Sobstyl, or are used with their owners’ permission. You have a personal, non-exclusive and non-transferable right to use the app for your family’s private use, for as long as you use it.
  • Some content comes from third parties and remains subject to its licence: public-domain poems, official word lists (including the UK Department for Education lists: “Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.”), the Dolch and Fry word lists, and fonts under the SIL Open Font License. Details are in the app (Settings › Credits and licences).

12. Availability and changes to the service

  • We do our best to keep Kamelo running, but interruptions can happen (maintenance, a provider outage, no connection). Exercises already created keep working offline; scans need a connection.
  • Kamelo evolves: we may add, change or remove features, in particular to improve it, keep it secure or comply with the law and store rules. If a change reduces your use of a paid service more than slightly, we will tell you in advance and you may cancel free of charge within 30 days.
  • During the test phase (beta), some features may be incomplete or change.
  • If we permanently close Kamelo, we will tell you at least 30 days in advance, you will be able to export your data, and the unused part of a paid subscription will be refunded through your store’s process.

13. Liability

  • We provide Kamelo with care and are liable for damage caused by a failure to meet our obligations, under the general law.
  • We are not liable in cases of force majeure, or where the damage results from your own actions or those of a third party (for example an outage of your store or network).
  • Nothing in these terms limits the rights you have by law as a consumer, in particular the legal guarantee of conformity for digital content and services (Articles L.224-25-12 et seq. of the French Consumer Code; in the UK, the Consumer Rights Act 2015), nor our liability for gross negligence, wilful misconduct or personal injury.
  • Kamelo helps your child practise, but school results depend on many factors: we do not promise any particular result.

14. Suspension and ending your use

  • You can stop using Kamelo and delete your account at any time: Settings › Privacy › “Delete my account and all data”.
  • If these terms are seriously breached (for example an attack on the service or an attempt to access someone else’s data), we may suspend the access concerned, warning you beforehand where possible. You can write to us to contest this decision.

15. Personal data

How we process your data and your child’s data is described in the privacy policy. A version for children, Kamelo and you, explains it in simple words.

16. Changes to these terms

We may change these terms, for example to follow changes to the service or the law. We will tell you about any significant change in the app at least 30 days before it takes effect. If you do not accept it, you can cancel your subscription and delete your account free of charge.

17. Governing law and disputes

  • These terms are governed by French law. If you are a consumer living in another country, you keep the protection of the mandatory provisions of the law of your country of residence.
  • If something goes wrong, please write to us first: most problems are solved quickly.
  • Mediation: if our answer does not satisfy you, you can use a consumer mediator free of charge (Articles L.612-1 et seq. of the French Consumer Code).
  • Courts: failing agreement, the dispute may be brought before the competent French courts. As a consumer, you may also go to the court of the place where you lived when the contract was concluded or when the damage occurred (Article R.631-3 of the French Consumer Code); if you live outside France, you may go to the courts of your country where the law allows it.
