Year 3 and 4 statutory spelling list

This word list is statutory: children in Years 3 and 4 in England are taught to spell these 100 words. The Department for Education describes the lists as a mixture of words pupils often use in their writing and words they often misspell. Brackets and slashes show related forms: accident(ally) covers accident and accidentally, busy/business covers both words.

Practising these words at home

  • Group the words by pattern

    Caught and naughty, eight and weight, heard, heart and learn: words that share an odd spelling are easier to learn side by side.

  • Break long words into syllables

    Say Feb-ru-ar-y, li-bra-ry or dif-fer-ent slowly, as they are written, then write them one chunk at a time.

  • Add the endings

    Once accident is secure, add -ally; once occasion is, add -ally too. The brackets in the list show which endings to practise.

  • Write it from memory

    Look at the word, say it, cover it, write it, then check it letter by letter. Our look, say, cover, write, check guide shows how.

Questions parents ask

Is the Year 3 and 4 spelling list statutory?
Yes. English Appendix 1 of the national curriculum says the word lists for Years 3 and 4 and Years 5 and 6 are statutory. Teachers choose how to spread the 100 words over the two years, often alongside other words that suit their class, so your child’s weekly spellings may mix list words with words following a spelling rule.
How many words are on the Year 3 and 4 list?
100 entries, from accident(ally) to woman/women. A few entries cover two related words, such as eight/eighth or though/although, so the number of words to spell is a little higher. The Department for Education says the 100 words can easily be taught across key stage 2 alongside other words.
What do the brackets and slashes mean?
They show related forms your child should learn too. Brackets add an ending: accident(ally) means accident and accidentally, forward(s) means forward and forwards. A slash pairs two words: busy/business, woman/women. They are part of the official list, so we keep them exactly as published.
Can I print this list?
Yes. The list is Crown copyright, published under the Open Government Licence, which allows copying and printing as long as the source is credited. The source is English Appendix 1: Spelling, from the Department for Education, credited at the bottom of this page, so you can print the page as it is.
